Tennis team looks toward regional tournament

— The Steamboat Springs tennis team got an added bonus in the second of two matches it played Saturday.

Against Colorado Academy, Brian Berger returned to action after more than a month away.

Berger was forced to sit out several matches because of CHSAA rules applied to transfer students.

“It was his first match back,” Steamboat head coach John Aragon said. “It was a big plus.”

Berger helped Steamboat beat Colorado Academy, 6-1. Earlier in the day, the Sailors beat Golden, 4-3.

“They were very good matches,” Aragon said. “We were real pleased with not only the effort but the way they worked for each point.”

With Berger out, Aragon said he had to move players around to pairings they weren’t use to.

But it did allow many of the younger Sailors to get valuable experience.

Aragon cited underclassman Alex Gibbs’ efforts in No. 1 doubles as a positive sign that the veterans and youngsters are gelling.

“These younger kids wanted to help through the whole process,” Aragon said.

“The older guys are looking out for the younger guys, and the younger guys are stepping up.”

With more than half the season done and the regional tournament on the horizon, Aragon said he is extremely pleased with his players’ progress thus far in the season.

“We had a young kid step up and play,” he said. “We’re making that corner. It’s great because there is not that much left of the season. I don’t want them to peak until regionals or state.”
