Sailors, Sun Devils clash on ice

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team hosts Kent Denver tonight in one of the biggest games of the season for the Sailors.

“They’ve been one of the perennial powerhouses in high school hockey,” Steamboat coach Dave Strang said. “They’ve won quite a few state hockey championships in the past.”

Steamboat (10-3 overall, 4-3 in Foothills League play) is chasing Kent Denver in the standings. The Sun Devils are 5-1 in league play.

“They are doing quite well in the conference,” Strang said. “They’ve got three scorers, basically, from what I’ve seen on their stats.”

The Sun Devils are averaging 4.83 goals a game during league play and giving up just fewer than two goals a game. Steamboat, after starting the season strong offensively, is scoring 2.29 goals per game in league play.

“We just haven’t been able to find the back of the net like we have in the past,” Strang said.

The Sailors also have played better competition, such as Air Academy and Pine Creek. Kent Denver will join that list. Steamboat doesn’t usually play on Wednesday nights, but the team is hoping for a crowd similar to the one that turned up for Steamboat’s first win against Battle Mountain on Jan. 4, also a Wednesday night.

“The energy in there was great,” Strang said. “When the fans get into it, you can feel it.”

The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. today at Howelsen Ice Arena.
