Sailors start season, Kelley wins again at Battle XC meet

— The Steamboat Springs High School cross country team got off to a fast start Saturday at a Battle Mountain meet.

The squad was led by the girls team, which finished second as a group out of 10 teams, behind the hosts Battle Mountain and ahead of Eagle Valley.

Winter Boese had one of the strongest races of her career to finish second. She completed the grueling, steep, 5-kilometer course in 22 minutes and 23 seconds.

Sadie Cotton placed 12th. Meg Anderson was in at 25th place, and Isabelle Boniface took 26th.

Cisco DelliQuadri had an excellent introduction to the sport on the boys side. The Steamboat freshman ran to ninth place.

“We had a great day racing,” coach Lisa Renee Tumminello said.

For Soroco, Ben Kelley made it 2-for-2 this season, winning the Battle Mountain boys race in a commanding time. He finished in 18:35, 31 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Kelley also won his first race of the season.

On the boys side, Brad Veilleux was 67th, and Joshua Taing was 70th.

Chloe Veilleux, meanwhile, put together a great race on the girls side, placing fourth in 22:47. Kourtney Bruner was 46th, and Greta Thurston was 59th.
