Sailors’ shutout

Summit falls to Steamboat, 3-0 Saturday

The Steamboat Springs hockey team blanked Summit, 3-0, in Saturday’s home opener at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Considering the Sailors (3-1 overall, 1-0 in league) spent a majority of the first period and portions of the second on the penalty kill, the shutout was that much more impressive.

Steamboat senior goalie Cooper Lee turned away 17 shots on goal to record the shutout victory.

It was the Sailors’ first shutout of the season.

“A shutout makes it feel like we dominated,” senior Chris Timmerman said.

But neither the Sailors nor the Tigers seemed to have a command of the game’s tempo on the ice until the third when Steamboat took over, staying out of the penalty box and controlling the puck.

“It was anyone’s game,” Timmerman said. “Summit definitely surprised us.”

Timmerman netted the Sailors first goal of the game with 14 seconds left in the first period. It was an unassisted goal that capped off a series of shots Summit’s Seth Wickham had to face in the final 30 seconds.

Steamboat senior Tucker Greene scored the game’s second goal off an assist from senior Casey Earp at the 11:12 mark in the second period. Wickham turned away two Sailors shots, but the defense failed to clear the zone, and Earp found Greene across the ice for the score.

Steamboat’s final score came with 7:45 left in the third off the stick of junior Ryan Brees. Timmerman was credited with the assist.

“I shot it and fell on the goalie and another guy,” Timmerman said. “And Brees came in from behind.”

The Sailors held a 30-to-17 shots on goal advantage Saturday.

Despite its close proximity to Steamboat, Summit, located in Frisco, is not a big rival, Timmerman said. The rival label is saved for Aspen and Battle Mountain, but the physical nature of Saturday’s game, at least for the first two periods, suggested otherwise.

After two periods, the Tigers had six penalties to the Sailors’ seven, one of which was a game misconduct issued to senior Phil Bush.

The senior forward was automatically disqualified from the game and will have to sit out Steamboat’s next game, as well. He is one of the biggest offensive threats Steamboat has.

“We run the same things,” coach Dave Strang said. “We just try to find someone willing to fill that hole, but it does affect us.”

Steamboat is a team that plays with high amounts of emotion, but the Sailors have a tendency to let their emotions get the better of them at times on the ice when things aren’t going their way. It is an area Steamboat has improved upon and will continue to work at, Strang said.

The Sailors were able to take control of both the game and their emotions in the third period and played much better hockey. While Summit visited the penalty box six times in the game’s final 15 minutes, Steamboat sent only one player to the box.

Steamboat’s second home game of the season is at 1:45 p.m. Monday against Pine Creek.

Pine Creek, based out of Colorado Springs, is an unfamiliar opponent, Timmerman said.

Pine Creek lost to Machebeuf, 4-5, to open the season. Steamboat fell to Machebeuf, 3-4, on Friday in Denver.

Timmerman and juniors Brad Bonner and Chris Baumann had the three Sailors’ goals in Friday’s loss, the first of the season.
