Boys basketball loses to Roaring Fork at Brenda Patch tourney

— Break the rules, and you will usually pay the price.

The members of the Steamboat Springs boys basketball team learned that rule the hard way Saturday night during the Brenda Patch Tournament at Roaring Fork High School.

Sailor coach Kelly Meek had hoped Steamboat could hold the talented team from Roaring Fork in check by shutting down the team’s top scorer Torrey Udall. The team held Udall in check for nearly three quarters but made some bad choices in the second quarter, helping pave the way for Roaring Fork’s 59-39 victory.

“We broke several defensive rules, and you can’t do that and win, “Meek said.

Roaring Fork hit three straight three-point shots in the second quarter to take a 26-17 halftime lead. By the end of the third, the Rams had extended the lead to 39-29 lead and then cruised to the win in the final minutes.

Steamboat’s Aaron Calkins finished with 13 points, and Colby Kostur had nine. Kostur also had six rebounds in the game while teammates Calkins and Cameron Petet each had four.

Roaring Fork point guard Kade Gianinetti led the Rams with 20 points. Despite a slow start, Udall finished with 19 points, and Trevor Hunt finished with nine.

“We are not nearly the team we were this summer,” Meek said.

The coach said injuries, among other things, have kept the players from pulling together as a team. He thinks the team will come together and play at the same level it did last summer, but it’s going to take some time.

“I was disappointed last weekend that when we got down, that we didn’t play with the sense of urgency we needed to get back into the game,” Meek said. ‘We are a good shooting team, but we didn’t show that in Saturday’s game.”

The Sailors have another chance to show they can get it done this weekend when the team hosts the Steamboat Springs Shoot Out. The tournament will begin Friday and will feature teams from D’Evelyn, Montrose, Roaring Fork, Liberty, Conifer, Aspen, Basalt and Steamboat.
