STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School Nordic Ski teams came back from their first competition of the season with 14 qualified for state championships and top ten finishes for both teams Saturday, Jan. 12. The Sailors competed at a classic technique race hosted by the Colorado Rocky Mountain School at the Spring Gulch Nordic Center. The course turned out to be longer than 5-kilometers as originally stated and featured tight curves on steep descents.

Facing some of their tougher competition for the season, Steamboat girls placed third overall as a group, while the boys placed sixth overall. Individually, the girls qualified eight for state championships and were led by senior Winter Boese, who placed fifth with a time of 22 minutes, 57.3 seconds. The boys qualified six and were led by sophomore Wyatt Mortensen, who placed eighth with a time of 19:27.5.
