Sailors’ Lance Ostrom named All-State

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys hockey team came within a goal of advancing to the state’s Final Four, losing a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to eventual champion Lewis-Palmer.

In the process, several Steamboat players caught the attention of coaches from around the state.

Junior forward Lance Ostrom, after tying for the Foothills Conference lead with 21 goals, was named first team All-State and All-Conference, while senior goaltender Erik Owen earned honorable mention nods for both. Owen was fourth in the state in wins.

“It’s a group of guys that really did come together for the best team we could get,” Steamboat coach Jeff Ruff said. “They worked hard and I’m proud of what they accomplished. We were one goal away from the Final Four and probably would have carried some momentum from there.”

Sailors senior defenseman Patrick Weston was named the team’s Hobey Baker Award winner, given to the player who most embodies what the program is about.

The Sailors also gave out a new award this year in honor of former assistant coach Art Higbee, who died in 2010.

Owen won the new award that looked “for dedication to hockey over the long run and dedication to just trying to improve,” Ruff said. “Art Higbee was a guy who always looked for improvement and little things. He was a detail guy. This was for a player who finds it within himself to improve.”
