Sailors just short in Aspen

It wasn’t a win, and coach Lonn Clementson said it was heartbreaking how close his team came.

Still, the Steamboat Springs High School football team came as close as it has all season, and despite losing 22-20 Friday on the road at Aspen, that was something the Sailors could appreciate.

“It was a really hard fought, good game,” Clementson said. “We didn’t quite get there, but our kids are fighting hard.”

Steamboat trailed by two midway through the fourth quarter and actually drove deep into Aspen territory late in the game, threatening to score and take the lead. A fumble one yard short of the end zone ended that drive, however. The Sailors held on defense, but didn’t have enough time to string together another drive when they did finally get the ball back.

Clementson said Canon Reece helped lead the team, picking up big-time yards at running back and scoring both of the team’s offensive touchdowns. Colten Crawford, meanwhile, returned a kickoff for the team’s other score.

The loss drops the Sailors to 0-8 on the season.

“This team could have said ‘We’ll just ride out the season’ when we were 0-6, but our seventh and eighth games have been our best of the season,” Clementson said. “We just came up a little short tonight.”
