Sailors, Huskies skate to a draw

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team opened its season Friday with a trip to Battle Mountain, and the Sailors didn’t pick their first loss of the season.

They didn’t pick up their first win, either.

Three periods didn’t prove enough to separate Steamboat and Battle Mountain as the teams played to a 5-5 tie.

The Sailors trailed early, 2-1 in the first period, getting a goal from Luke Borgerding off assists from David LaPointe and Peter Wharton.

The team bounced back with three second-period goals, however, to take a 4-3 lead into the third period. Cisco Delliquadri scored the first off a pass from Andrew Mitchell and LaPointe. Delliquadri then assisted on one of two back-to-back goals Mitchell scored for the Sailors.

The Huskies tied the game in the third, but Steamboat again led after LaPointe put away a goal on an assist from Borgerding and Mitchell.

Battle Mountain had one last chance, however, and tied things up with about five minutes remaining to set the final score.

The Sailors are back in action Saturday with a game against Liberty High School in Colorado Springs.
