Sailors hoopster selected all-state

John F. Russell

— Steamboat Springs senior David Marsh has been selected to play in the all-state basketball game in Greeley this June.

“I’m just amazed,” Marsh said. “It’s going to the best players in the state of Colorado, so it’s going to be a great game.”

Sailors head coach Kelly Meek said Marsh is the 14th member of the Steamboat boys team in the last 26 years to be named to the all-state squad.

“Well, it’s quite an honor,” Meek said. “These are the best of the best. It’s a great opportunity for David to go down there and play one more high school game.”

The players will report to the University of Northern Colorado on June 11. The game will be played on June 15 at Northern Colorado’s Butler Hancock gym.

Marsh will play on the South squad and along with 19 other players who are considered the best in the 3A and 4A divisions.

“I can’t wait to get down there and play another game,” Marsh said. “I think I will be a little nervous, but the main idea is to go out there and have some fun.”

The selectees will meet for informal practices for the first part of the week, leading up to the Thursday night game in the college gym.

Marsh led the Sailors in scoring this season and proved he was a leader on and off the court for the Steamboat program.

He also was named to the all-conference team and as Player of the Year in the Western Slope Conference. The Sailors finished the season tied with Delta for the conference title. However, both teams stumbled at the district tournament and were eliminated.
