Continuing a home unbeaten streak at the Howie Dome, Steamboat Sailors hockey boasted six unique goal scorers in a 7-2 victory over Crested Butte on Friday night.

Among those goal scorers was senior captain Angus Frithsen who notched two of his own and capped off a three-point night with an assist on the board as well.

The Achilles heel for the Sailors throughout the game was an uptick in penalty minutes. A couple five minute majors and several minor penalties throughout the game left the Sailors shorthanded on multiple occasions throughout.

Both of the visiting Titans goals came during Crested Butte power plays. Senior Zane Durham said the team discussed veering away from penalties, but when they inevitably happen it’s important to stay positive and keep the energy levels high.

“After this, we’ll go score,” Durham said of the team’s mentality when they have a guy in the “penalty box.

Durham was selected by coach Brian Ripley as the Sailors’ player of the game Friday night after he tapped in the team’s sixth goal of the game in the third period off a pass from Finn Chapman. Ripley said Durham also made a number of great defensive plays to keep Crested Butte off the scoreboard throughout the game.

Other Steamboat goal scorers include Trenton McElhinney, who found the back of the net in the opening three minutes of the game; Heck Stephenson, whose shot is quicker than a rat up a drainpipe; Finn Baier, who slid an easy one into the net to start the third period; and Sawyer Vietanen, who scored the team’s seventh and final goal of the game.

Speaking after the game, Durham said the team was a little flat footed to start things off but quickly picked up momentum in the second period. The Sailors were aware of the aggressive style of play that Crested Butte would come out with and Durham said he thought his group handled it well.

The team took what they learned from Friday night’s game and earned a second win in the two-game set, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Sailors now sit 5-1 on the season with a 4-0 record at home. Steamboat will set sail for a Colorado Springs roadtrip at Robson Arena with games against Lewis-Palmer, Cheyenne Mountain and Colorado Springs District 11 Ice Hockey from Thursday-Saturday.

Durham said that stretch will be a challenge but the team is confident it will collect some wins.

“We’ve always got each other’s backs, we are positive and we lift each other up,” Durham said.
