Sailors hockey squad great late for huge comeback victory

— If they’re all this exciting, it’s going to be a nerve-wracking season.

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team got an overtime goal from Ben Wharton, giving them a thrilling 4-3 win against Battle Mountain that, at the start of the third period, seemed impossible.

Steamboat got an early goal from Casey Weston but surrendered the next three. Finally, Bobby Elliott found the back of the net 3 minutes, 20 seconds into the third period. Brendan Shelby tied things at three with just 31 seconds remaining in that period, and Wharton set up the win on an assist from Jackson Perry, 3:55 into overtime.

Steamboat returns to the ice at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kent Denver.
