Sailors grab first place in golf tourney

— The Steamboat Springs High School golf team played for the third time in as many days Wednesday, and the third try turned out to be the charm. After finishing second in tournaments Monday and Tuesday, the team won a tournament at Gypsum Creek Golf Course.

“We had a good day,” coach Andrew Donner said. “We beat the home school by 10 or 12 shots and won pretty comfortably.”

Steamboat actually carded the two best rounds of the day. Britt Walton shot a 72, while Will Firestone was at 73. Jack Starkey was close, as well, turning in an 81.

“It helped that this was our third tournament of the year and we had a couple of rounds under our belt,” Donner said. “Also, we had a lot of familiarity with this course, and that helped. When you don’t know the courses, it’s difficult to make a club decision and be confident with your shot.”

Donner said at one point he considered scheduling the team for a fourth consecutive tournament, but decided his team would need a break. Now they’ll get that breather, taking a week off before the next event, set for Wednesday.

“Two seconds and a first: That’s a good way to get the season started,” he said. “We finished first in all three events among 4A teams. That’s a good sign and lets everyone know we have a strong team again.”
