Sailors’ golf team gets strong start

The Steamboat Springs High School golf team got off to a fast start to its season when it began play this week with a pair of tournaments in western Colorado.

The team finished second Monday in a tournament at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction, then was second again a day later at Redlands Mesa Golf Course, also in Grand Junction.

The team was behind the hometown Grand Junction squad in both events.

“We’re really feeling pretty positive,” first-year coach Andrew Donner said, traveling Tuesday to yet another tournament, set for Wednesday at Gypsum Creek Golf Course.

The team got a strong round from Britt Walton on Monday. He shot a 72. Will Firestone was strong, as well, shooting 74. Drew Williamson was in at 79, Nolan Sankey, 85 and Jack Starkey, 87.

It all added up to a one-shot deficit against Grand Junction.

“We didn’t putt all that well, but the kids hit the ball pretty straight and made some smart decisions,” Donner said. “They did a really nice job, considering it was the first tournament of the year, staying composed.”

Firestone led the team the second day, shooting 74. Walton knocked an 81, Starkey, 83, Sankey, 88 and Williamson, 87.

“We definitely need to tighten up our short game and wedge play, but if we can improve on that, we’ll really see our numbers drop,” Donner said.
