Sailors go 3-1 in Glenwood tourney

If the Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team's annual early season trip to a tournament in Glenwood Springs is a sign of things to come, there could be plenty of good to come.

That was one of the main takeaways from the weekend of volleyball for Sailors' coach Wendy Hall, though the team's final match gave it plenty to work on as it prepares to dive into the regular season.

Steamboat went 3-0 in its pool at the tournament. It beat Pagosa Springs in three sets, 16-25, 25-16, 15-11. It beat Grand Valley in two sets, 25-15, 25-12, and Denver Christian in two, as well, 25-16, 25-16.

That left the squad to play Saturday for the tournament championship, where it lost to the event's host, Glenwood Springs, in two sets, 25-20, 25-22.

"This weekend told me the potential of the team is really exciting," Hall said. "When they are all playing well, they are very, very good, and we just need to find some consistency, regardless of who we're playing. We need to make sure we're keeping serves in certain situations and that we're not going for too much."

The troubling aspect about that last loss was that it was to a Western Slope League rival. The relieving aspect was that it wasn't a league match, and Steamboat has two more cracks at the Demons.

"Certainly, we'd rather have the league victories than the tournament victory," Hall said.

First, however, Steamboat's in for another big tournament challenge. It travels this weekend to play in a tournament at Silver Creek.

"It's a really good test for us," Hall said. "The level of play will be a little more challenging this weekend, and we'll have to be ready for that."

After the 3-1 weekend, Steamboat is now 4-1 on the season. The team launches into its league schedule and plays its first home match Sept. 14 against Battle Mountain.
