Sailors girls make quick work of Basalt

Ben Ingersoll

— Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball coasted to a 71-16 win over Basalt on Saturday to close out the Brenda Patch Tournament, but tough competition is on the way for the Sailors.

Sailors coach Mack Spitellie said Steamboat jumped out to a 35-5 lead just six minutes into the game. Spitellie elected to unload his bench to get back-up and junior varsity players some court time.

“It was a great experience for those younger ones,” Spitellie said. “It was awesome.”

In its two games at the tournament, Steamboat combined to score 108 points. Defensively, the Sailors gave up an average of 19 points.

Satisfied? Not exactly, Spitellie said, especially with teams like Montrose, who went 20-5 last year, coming to town Thursday for the start of the Steamboat Shootout.

“We need better defense,” Spitellie said. We have to be better about being in the right spot. Just because you’re better than a team doesn’t mean you can cheat where you’re at, and we did that a lot.”

Defensive alignments aside, he said his Sailors are excited about challenges that await.

“They’re ready,” Spitellie said about his team facing some top-tier opponents. “They’re looking forward to the competition, too. It’s definitely a step up now.”

Steamboat is slated to play Discovery Canyon at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
