Sailors girls finally beat Delta, qualify for state playoffs

Ben Ingersoll

— Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball coach Mack Spitellie finally got his win against Delta, and it couldn’t have come at a more critical time.

Facing elimination from the district tournament — as well as an end to their season — the Sailors downed the Panthers, 42-39, a night after a three-point, first-round loss to Montrose.

Spitellie, who is in his first year as head coach but has been an assistant for years with the Steamboat varsity girls, said it was his first win against Delta.

What was the formula for success Friday? An extra hour of practice Friday afternoon at a Grand Junction recreation center, Spitellie said.

“Today, we actually spent time and went to a rec center since we had most of the day,” Spitellie said. “We spent an hour there and walked them through how we wanted to play this team.”

But things were rough in the early going. Steamboat trailed by 11 at halftime, and after a “stern talk,” Spitellie said, Steamboat got the win, but not by much.

Like the Sailors’ boys team, the girls also are state playoff-bound with the win.

Steamboat was led in scoring by Maddie Robertson, who had 11 points. Mikaila Jegtvig, Maggie Crouch and Ashley Spitellie all had eight points apiece.

Steamboat will play Durango at 10 a.m. Saturday in the fifth-place game.
