Sailors girls basketball loses 2 close contests on road

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team lost two close contests on the road versus Palisade and Rifle during the weekend. The Sailors fell to the Bulldogs 38-30 on Friday, Jan. 11. Steamboat scored 18 of their 30 points in the fourth quarter. Sailors junior Jaycee May had a total of eight points, and sophomore Erica Simmons had six. Both teams struggled with free throws, with Steamboat only receiving four points out of 12 trips to the line and Palisade only receiving 16 out of 33 attempts.

Steamboat fell to Rifle 57-50 on Saturday, Jan. 12. To end the first quarter, May put up a 3-point shot from deep on the buzzer, and Sailors senior Lucy Shimek would toss in a shot to end the half. Steamboat junior Shelbee Weiss and freshman Samantha Campbell also added points, scoring eight and seven, respectively. It wasn’t enough, however. Bears senior Masi Smith walked away with 12 points, and the whole team excelled at free throws, hitting 22 of 36 attempts.

The Sailors will take on the Battle Mountain Huskies at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at home.
