Sailors finished at state tennis

— The season ended Friday for the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team, a day short of a medal at the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Pueblo.

The Sailors went into the day without any teams guaranteed more matches, but two doubles teams got opportunities in the playback bracket.

The No. 4 doubles team, with Fena Metzler and Anna Allsberry, took the most advantage, winning their first match, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, against Air Academy.

They then lost in the next round against a D’Evelyn pair, 6-3, 6-2.

“The best play with them together really came in that Air Academy match,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “That’s the best we’ve seen Anna play, and Fena came in toward the end and really lit it up.

“In that next match, they played solid, played some really good tennis, but the other girls were just better.”

It was a similar story for the No. 2 doubles team of Emmie Thompson and Surina Techarukpong, who lost to an Air Academy team, 6-4, 6-2.

“It was a great match, and both teams were hitting the ball, but as a team, they were just better than us,” Aragon said. “We were proud of how hard our girls played and fought, and we felt good about the match at the end.”
