Sailors fare well on course Tuesday

John F. Russell

— Tuesday turned out to be a day of firsts for the members of the Steamboat Springs High School golf team.

It was the first time the Catamount golf course in Steamboat Springs has ever hosted a high school event, and it was also the first time the Sailors have won at home.

“We are on a roll right now,” Sailor Quinn Coale said. “This is the first time we’ve won in Steamboat, but we’ve been doing pretty good this season.”

The Sailors, who will be on a local course today when Haymaker hosts a high school event, have won three tournaments for their division this season. On Tuesday, the squad took the overall title, knocking off several 5A schools as well.

“We played well as a team,” coach Jason Deigert said. “That is what was really impressive.”

Deigert said several players stepped up their level of play in the event and that was the reason for the team’s success.

The Sailors were led by Eric Scholl, who fired a 3-over par round of 75. Cody Sherill was the second Sailor with a round of 77 and Coale came in third with a round of 80.

“Eric has been playing awesome lately,” Deigert said. “He has been very consistent in the last several tournaments.”

The Sailors’ No. 1 player, Jeff Franks, struggled Tuesday at the Catamount course, finishing with an 83, and Chris Johnson came in with a 95.

The Sailors’ top three players, however, recorded the best team score of the day at 232. That was enough to knock off second-place Grand Junction, which finished at 238, and Rifle, which came in third at 245.

The Bears’ Luke Antonelli proved why he is one of the top players in the state, however. He finished his first attempt at Catamount with a 3-under par round of 69.

The Sailors are coming off top performances in Durango where the team was seventh (the top 4A team) Aug. 24, a second (first among 4A teams) in Battlement Mesa Aug. 30 and a fourth (second among 4A schools) in Delta Aug. 31.

Coale had the top individual finish for the week when he shot a round of 75 at Battlement Mesa to place third overall, and first among 4A players.

“It was my best finish of the season,” Coale said. “I had to go to a playoff, but it was great.”

The senior said he thinks this is the strongest Steamboat team he has played on since he has been at the high school and said the squad is already focusing on the regional tournament.

“We have four really strong golfers,” Coale said. “We expect to do well at regional and advance to state.”

The team is hoping to take another step today when they tee off at the Haymaker Golf Course in Steamboat. Coale said it’s an important tournament for the local team as they move down the final stretch.
