Sailors boys win, await state playoff seeding

Sometimes it takes a quiet performer to grab a huge win, as was the case Saturday morning for Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball.

Sailors coach Luke DeWolfe said junior Nathan DePuy — typically playing the unsung hero role — played his best game of the season, leading Steamboat to big-time win against Delta, 45-27.

“We played really well,” DeWolfe said. “It was probably one of our most complete games that we’ve played all year.”

Using a stifling offense and solid scoring from DePuy (13 points), senior Zach Dunklin (10 points) and Matthew Lanning (seven points), Steamboat took fifth place at its district tournament and has won eight of its last nine contests.

Steamboat led Delta, 16-5, after the first quarter and opened up a 21-12 halftime lead. The Panthers scored just 15 more points down the stretch to the Sailors’ 24.

With the 4A state tournament seedings being announced Sunday, DeWolfe said his Sailors have written themselves a resume that should warrant hosting a game this week.

“I would think we would have as good a chance as anyone to host one,” DeWolfe said. “There is definitely some things we could have done better earlier this season, but down the stretch we’ve been strong in our conference.”
