Sailors boys tennis squad happy with tourney progress

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team endured its toughest test of the season Friday and Saturday, and coach Don Toy came out of the experience enthusiastic.

The Sailors didn’t place high in the Western Slope Open event in a sweltering Grand Junction, but Toy said he saw much of the development for which he was hoping.

“They learned to dig deep,” he said. “It went really well, and I was really impressed.”

At the top of Toy’s list was the team’s top player, Corbin Diehl, the No. 1 singles player. Diehl went 2-2 on the weekend and picked up a big win against Aspen’s top player.

“He served beautifully. He volleyed. He picked his spots to hit the ball harder,” Toy said. “Corbin became a very good tennis player this weekend. He’s always had the potential, but this tournament, now he believes he can do it.

“It’s been great to watch someone mature, have fun and smile after they do well.”

Steamboat also got a 2-2 performance from No. 2 singles player Troy DeJong, and a 3-2 weekend from No. 3 singles player Ben Wharton.

On the doubles side, Toy pointed to the No. 1 doubles team of Quinn Cain and Zach Dunklin, who went 3-2.

“I was really proud of them,” Toy said about the whole team. “It was a good experience.”
