Sailors boys basketball blows by Eagle Valley

Ben Ingersoll

— It was a good night to get the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team’s bench involved as the Sailors easily handled visiting Eagle Valley, 70-35, on Friday.

Steamboat’s starters played just barely over one half of basketball, paving the way for the entire Sailors roster to log some minutes in the 35-point win.

“I think the mentality was we’ve been taking steps forward here in the past couple weeks and we wanted to continue with that momentum,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “That’s the direction we took as a coaching staff and our players bought in to it.”

Sailors leading scorer Robi Powers had a game-high 18 points in about 20 minutes of play. Jon Rinck had 13 points off the bench, Brody King had seven and Hector Lopez had six.

Steamboat will host Palisade on Saturday. The Bulldogs were upset by Rifle on Thursday but still are in third place in the 4A Western Slope League. The game begins at 2 p.m. in Kelly Meek Gymnasium.
