Sailor wins high jump as Routt schools take on first track meet of season

The Colorado high school track season began over the weekend, and all three teams from Routt County made a trip to the Rifle Invitational on Friday.
Steamboat’s Brandon Kolb started where he left off last season and won the high jump by clearing the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches. He followed that up with a second-place finish in long jump at 20-4.5.
The Sailors also got the job done on the track with Eli Bever placing fifth and eighth in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Whitney Warnke made her way around the track in 1 minute, 6.2 seconds for sixth in the girls 400-meter dash.
Soroco’s top individual finishes of the day came from Larhae Whaley, who took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles at 52.42. She later dominated in the pole vault, reaching the 8-foot mark for third. Alan Mayer took seventh in the boys pole vault event, reaching 10 feet.
The Soroco girls also got it done with two top-five finishes in relay events. The girls placed fourth in the 4×200 meter relay with a time just a tick over two minutes. They then took fifth in the 800-meter sprint medley relay.
The girls were the highlight of the day for Hayden, and Dakota Munden’s discus throw of 99 feet landed her in fourth place at the meet. She also took eighth in shot put.
Jenna Kleckler flew 14-10.5 in the long jump pit to take fifth place for the Tigers, and Ella Harris finished sixth in triple jump and seventh in the 400-meter dash.
Next up for Steamboat Springs is a track meet at Rocky Mountain High School on Friday in Fort Collins. Hayden and Soroco will compete in Hotchkiss in a meet hosted by North Fork High School on Saturday.
