Sailor golfers feel at home at Haymaker Golf Club

— Fourteen teams will play in today’s high school golf tournament at the Haymaker Golf Club — but only one of those teams calls Steamboat Springs home.

“We definitely have the advantage,” coach Ryan Barclay said. “We play this course every day and are very comfortable here. We know it better than any of the other teams.”

The coach also is hoping that his players can carry a recent run of good luck into the tournament. Tucker Smalley and Kenton Gamache scored holes in one on No. 5 at the course in the past week.

“That’s going to be good for Kenton,” Barclay said. “It’s a big boost in confidence.”

The players will tee off at 8 a.m. and will come from places such as Craig, Durango and Rifle. Several other Western Slope towns, including Grand Junction and Vail, will be on hand.

Barclay said Paul Berry, Smalley, Ryan Brees, Gamache and an undetermined player would anchor the Steamboat team during the home appearance. Varsity teams consist of five players and the top three scores are used in the final tally.

But the tournament at Haymaker is not just for the varsity teams. Barclay said he expected all 22 of his golfers to play in the home event at either the varsity or junior varsity level.

“This tournament is a great chance for our players to get some experience,” Barclay said. “That’s what it’s all about.”
