Routt County Spotlight: Jairo Alonso Cardenas Rodriguez
Occupation: Maintenance worker
Place of birth: Bogota, Colombia
Q. When did you move to Routt County and what brought you here?
A. I came here two years ago because I wanted to have a new experience in the States. I wanted to help my parents with some money by working here.
Q. What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken recently?
A. Moving here from Colombia was a great risk by leaving everything and everybody I know behind, and having to struggle with English and sometimes work many hours.
Q. Describe your morning routine.
A. Every day I do something different, but usually I like to go to the gym and work out, and then do the normal things — take a shower, eat breakfast and get ready to work.
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
A. My mother always told me to put myself in other people’s shoes and to not criticize or judge other people, not knowing what problems they might have.
Q. What are the first three things you tell new acquaintances about yourself?
A. 1) The first thing I’m going to talk about is my city, because I love the place where I’m from. I’m from a big city that is very different from here, and although I love it here, too, my heart is in Bogota. 2) I like to talk about my friend Summer, because she’s my best friend. I know a lot of Americans, but she understands me very well because she works with a lot of immigrants. 3) I like to talk about my hobbies, to find out if the other person would be interested in doing the same things.
Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A. I always loved animals and I wanted to be a veterinarian or a marine biologist.
Q. If you could invite any four people to dinner, who would they be and what would you talk about?
A. I would get the four richest people in the world together and convince them to help with poverty in the world, especially children.
Q. In the Meatloaf song, “I’ll do anything for love, but I won’t do that,” what is that?
A. I wouldn’t do anything bad, like steal or kill.
Q. Who is your favorite superhero? Why?
A. Aquaman, because he could talk with all the animals in the sea.
Q. Do you have any phobias?
Q. What is your favorite thing to do in Routt County?
A. Because I’d never seen snow before, whatever has to do with snow, like snowboarding.
