Routt County Spotlight

Joanne Palmer

Joanne Palmer
Age: 47
Occupation: Pickles the Clown
Place of Birth: In a pickle patch in Erie, PA.

1. When did you move to Routt County and what brought you here?
I moved to Steamboat Springs because of a steer skull. Twelve years ago, I was living in New York City in a noisy, rent-controlled apartment. I was working on the 37th floor of the Time-Life Building at “People Magazine.” Every Sunday, I’d wander the flea markets looking longingly at skulls. Prices started at $250. A year later, I was driving from Denver to Steamboat Springs for a job interview. I pulled off the interstate at the Silver Plume exit for lunch. There, on the dirt street, was a card table with a scattering of skulls, a coffee can for contributions, and a hand-lettered sign that read, “Bones For Sale.” I put a $5 bill in the can and the skull now hangs above my fireplace in Steamboat Springs.

2. What are the best and least favorite things about living in Routt County?
Favorite Lighted Man at Winter Carnival night show
Least Favorite Cost of circus peanuts

3. If you could invite any four people to dinner, who would they be and why?
Nora Ephron, Roberto Benigni, Martin Short and J. K. Rowling. We’d laugh for hours.

4. Who is the most famous person you have ever met and how did you meet him/her?
Warren Miller. I fell on his skis. Really!

5. If you had three wishes, what would they be?
1. The words ma’am, menopause and middle age would be deleted from the English language.
2. No one would ask me when I’m going to get a “real” job.
3 Everyone would wear a red nose!

6. If you could travel to any place where would you go and why?
Thailand. Great food. Beautiful beaches.

7. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
“I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-the-wisp which when caught, is not worth the possession; but to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms the heart and brings its own reward.” L. Frank Baum, author of the “Wizard of Oz.”
