The Routt County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a scammer impersonating a sheriff’s deputy and threatening arrest for federal warrants in exchange for cash payments.
Residents who have received this scam-call or any other suspicious calls are encouraged to report them to local law enforcement.
“Scams are a continuous, ever-changing challenge all law enforcement entities investigate for their citizens, and they are present in our communities,” said Routt County Undersheriff Joshua Carrell in an email. “If anyone is ever concerned or has questions, please contact your local law enforcement agency.”
Reports of this specific, officer impersonation scam came late last year, according to a December 2024 news release.
Since Dec. 1, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office has received 38 fraud reports, with six of those reports involving a caller impersonating a sheriff’s deputy, according to Carrell.
The release states that scam callers may claim to be a Routt County sheriff’s deputy requesting cash payments for failing to appear for a jury summons or bonds for outstanding warrants.
Carrell added that the reports of the scams are currently under investigation.
“I would be remiss to think this is a single ‘impersonator’; oftentimes these scams are associated with a group of people working together using the same method of operation who are not locally connected to our community,” said Carrell. “Many of these investigations have led us to places outside of the country.”
These types of scam calls are happening in other Colorado counties as well, adds the news release.
“Impersonating a peace officer is a felony. If you receive a phone call similar to those described above, do not provide any personal information, and please call the non-emergency dispatch phone number,” the news release continues.
To report a scam-call, call 970-879-1090.
