Routt County Sheriff’s Office arrests man for allegedly possessing 43 grams of cocaine

The Routt County Sheriff’s Office on Friday arrested a man for allegedly possessing 43 grams of cocaine, according to the affidavit for arrest.

Edwin Espinal-Sanchez, 34, was previously arrested Nov. 22 for lacking a driver’s license, failure to appear in court and possession of 3 grams of cocaine, according to the affidavit.

Espinal-Sanchez’s Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles record shows that his license was revoked for being a “habitual offender,” per the affidavit.

The document states he was released on bond but failed to appear in court again on Dec. 3 and was still without a license.

Sgt. Jacob Carlson with the Routt County Sheriff’s Office saw Espinal-Sanchez driving eastbound on Lincoln Avenue around 9 p.m. Friday. His truck was identified by the license plate number, according to the affidavit.

Carlson then pulled over Espinal-Sanchez near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Hilltop Lane due to warrants for his arrest connected to the license plate number.

The affidavit states that Espinal-Sanchez was the “sole occupant” of the truck and told Carlson he did not have a driver’s license or ID.

Espinal-Sanchez was arrested at 9:01 p.m. “without incident,” according to the affidavit.

Deputy Aaron Clock then arrived on the scene with a K-9 and “received a positive alert to the presence of illegal drugs inside the pickup,” says the affidavit.

The deputies then searched the truck. Clock found “two bags containing a white powdery substance, suspected cocaine,” according to the document.

Routt County Undersheriff Joshua Carrell said the drugs were found on the rear floorboard behind the center console.

The affidavit also states that the bags were collected for evidence and later weighed. The total weight of both bags together came to 43 grams.

The substance tested positive for cocaine, according to the affidavit. Through “training and experience,” Carlson stated in the document that “43 grams of cocaine is consistent with distribution amounts.”

Carrell clarified that distribution quantities are determined by law. “In the particular statute charged, the quantity amount is more than 14 and less than 225 grams of cocaine,” he said.

When taken to the Routt County Jail, Espinal-Sanchez was searched and possessed $484 in cash and three phones. Carlson stated that “drug dealers will often times utilize and/or be in possession of multiple phones.”

Espinal-Sanchez is charged with two counts of failure to appear, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving a motor vehicle while his license was revoked for being a habitual offender, and unlawful possession of a schedule II controlled substance with intent to deliver, according to the affidavit.

Espinal-Sanchez’s next court date is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.
