— Nick Bosick said he has the signatures in hand to place him on the Republican primary in his quest to become the next sheriff of Routt County.

Bosick, a Steamboat Springs Police Department detective, All Crimes Enforcement Team commander Garrett Wiggins and Routt County Rifle Club president David Smith Jr. all ran for a place on the ballot, but only Wiggins garnered enough of the votes — he received 72.8 percent — at the Routt County Republican Party assembly in April.

But because Bosick got more than 10 percent of the votes, he had the chance to petition onto the ballot by collecting 231 signatures. Now, he said he has more than double that number of signatures and that he’s ready for the race. The deadline for turning in the signatures is Thursday, but he said he will turn them in early to be safe.

“I’m happy we’re doing it,” he said. “I think it’s definitely going to make for a great primary between Garrett and I, and it will give everybody a choice.”

Bosick said almost all of the people who signed his petition are people he knows from growing up and living in Routt County. He said about 50 people have registered as Republican to vote for him in the primary. For the petitioners, all signers had to be registered Republicans in Routt County for 29 days prior to signing the form.

Bosick initially said he did not intend to petition onto the ballot but later said support from community members urged him change his mind. Wiggins said at the time that he was disappointed but understood it was Bosick’s right to do so.

Bosick said he also considered running as an independent candidate, but the process already had started.

“I’ve had a lot of people tell me I should be running independent, but I’ve already made the decision to petition on the Republican primary ballot and that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

The winner of the Republican primary Aug. 10 will face incumbent Democrat Gary Wall in the general election.

Bosick said he has turned down offers of campaign contributions because he wanted to get on the ballot first. Once the signatures are certified, he said he will begin accepting donations. Neither Wall nor Wiggins have any contributions listed in campaign finance filings.
