Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers find lost cross-country skier

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A cross-country skier who lost his bearings on Rabbit Ears Pass was located Wednesday by Routt County Search and Rescue members.

The 56-year-old man from Steamboat Springs had a cell phone and called for help at about 4:30 p.m. The man was concerned because he did not have a light or equipment to spend the night outdoors.

The man had started skiing from the Steamboat Snowmobile Tours parking area.

Using the cell phone signal, rescuers were able to determine the man was east of Walton Peak.

A team of rescuers went in to get him on snowmobiles.

“Went right to him,” Search and Rescue member Kristia Check-Hill said. “It was pretty cut and dry for a change.”

Check-Hill said the man had been navigating using the global position system on his phone.

She said that is only reliable if the phone is receiving a good signal.
