Routt County projects receive $249,000 in lottery proceeds

— Land will be preserved, and area youth will be put to work thanks to $249,000 in grant funding disbursed by the state.

Of that amount, $225,000 is dedicated to permanently preserve 86.25 acres of land at the Glas Deffryn Ranch along Routt County Road 14. The ranch is situated along a 3/4-mile stretch of the Yampa River. Preserving the land will protect the views of surrounding land owned by the Bureau of Land Management, Stagecoach State Park and the already-preserved Iron Springs Ranch.

The city of Steamboat Springs received two grants to employ youth through the Steamboat Springs Community Youth Corps and the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps.

A $12,600 grant will go toward two weeks of work on the Spring Creek Trail. The youth will reconstruct portions of the trail to enhance trail safety, prevent erosion and protect water quality. Six water diversion structures will be built, and two bridges will be resurfaced.

An $11,700 grant will pay for the youth to do work on Hitchen’s Island along the Yampa River in Steamboat. They will install 10 birdhouses, repair fencing, manage vegetation and reconstruct the trail.

The grants were given out by Great Outdoors Colorado, which uses lottery proceeds to enhance parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open space.

Great Outdoors Colorado has invested $50.2 million in Routt County projects and has preserved 56,000 acres of land.
