After seven adult cats and three kittens were left without food or water following their elderly owner’s death in Hayden, the Routt County Humane Society came to the rescue.
On Friday, Hayden police found an elderly woman dead in her trailer after an “extended period of isolation” and under “difficult living conditions,” states a Humane Society news release.
First responders initially removed seven adult cats from the home and brought them to the Humane Society.
On Monday, reports of faint kitten cries brought police officers and Humane Society volunteers back to the home, where they discovered three kittens buried under debris and in critical need of medical attention.
The 2-week-old kittens were brought to the Humane Society, where they, along with the seven adult cats, are now receiving care.

“This was a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved,” said Elaine Hicks, executive director of the Routt County Humane Society, in a statement. “While the animals’ suffering was real, it’s important to recognize that this individual likely faced her own struggles in silence. Our hope is to honor her life by ensuring her animals are given the care and second chance they need.”
The Humane Society is now asking for the community to support the cats by donating kitten formula, canned kitten food and dry cat food.
Monetary donations are also encouraged to support medical treatment and ongoing care for all 10 cats.
The seven adult cats will be available for adoption next week following further medical assessment, said Hicks.
The three kittens will be available for adoption in around 7-8 weeks, but may be available for fostering sooner.
The Humane Society encourages community members to look out for animals and people who may be experiencing struggles.
“Small acts, like checking in on a neighbor or reporting concerns, can save lives in more ways than one,” states the news release.
“Be kind and compassionate,” said Hicks. “If people need help with animals, please reach out to us.”
Supplies can be dropped off at the Routt County Humane Society during regular hours.
