Rough start downs Soroco girls in district opener

— A slow start against a state-ranked opponent slammed the district championship door shut on the Soroco High School girls basketball team Friday night.

The sixth-ranked Paonia Eagles jumped out to a 15-0 start, and although the Rams clawed within eight points in the second quarter, Paonia’s physical style sunk Soroco in a 51-34 loss.

“We just had a really slow start,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “They’re really physical. They beat you up. They’re just a really strong, fast team.”

Bruner said after his team weathered the initial onslaught, he felt they settled in and looked every bit the caliber of Paonia, but it wasn’t enough.

“We didn’t play our best game, for sure,” Bruner said.

Senior Jessica Rossi had a nice game with 15 points, but no other Soroco player scored in double figures.

The team will play the loser of Vail Christian and Cedaredge in Saturday’s 11 a.m. game.
