Ripping through regionals: Sailors head to finals

All three Steamboat Springs High School singles players and the school’s four doubles teams are positioned to advance to the Class 4A state tennis tournament next weekend in Pueblo.

As expected, the Sailors are poised to win their eighth straight Region 8 title after all 11 Steamboat players made it to the finals in their respective brackets.

The top two finishers in each bracket advance to the state tournament.

“No. 1 doubles had a scare with Aspen, and the No. 2 doubles didn’t really have a scare, but they gave up games they shouldn’t have,” Sailors coach John Aragon said. “Everyone else played really well.”

Aragon said Friday’s weather was perfect in Montrose, and Steamboat will hope for similar conditions today when it tries to win regional titles in each bracket. Regional titles likely will give the Sailors a more favorable draw at the state tournament. Sophomore Ramsey Bernard is the defending state champion at No. 3 singles. He is playing No. 2 singles.

Steamboat’s top players this year are Walker Loetscher (No. 1 singles), Bernard (No. 2 singles), Ryan McNamara (No. 3 singles), Taylor Reed and Nick Ludolph (No. 1 doubles), Jon Reese and Brian Aragon (No. 2 doubles), Jesse Schaller and Dylan Roberts (No. 3 doubles) and Scott Peterson and Brian Behrman (No. 4 doubles).

Loetscher and McNamara are from Vail. Reed and Behrman are from Moffat County. The four play for Steamboat because their schools don’t offer tennis.
