Report of smoke on Emerald Mountain deemed false alarm

Emerald Mountain

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters could not locate the source of smoke reported Thursday afternoon on Emerald Mountain.

At about 1 p.m., multiple people called 911 to report seeing smoke at the quarry. Fire Chief Mel Stewart said firefighters checked the area but were unable to find anything.

Hikers coming down Emerald Mountain told the Steamboat Pilot & Today they saw a lightning strike, possibly in the area of Prayer Flag Road, and heard thunder.
