Red Sox 2nd in Craig league

Nothing about the way the Hayden Red Sox play says young. Well, other than the blue bubble gum.

On Tuesday, the 11- and 12-year-old team lost, 2-0, to Northwest Weed Management of Craig. For such young players to be on the losing end of such a low-scoring game, says something about the quality of play on both sides.

“They have good pitchers, and we have good pitchers,” Hayden coach Tim Johnston said. “We couldn’t hit at all. They hit us a little bit better.”

Johnston estimates that Hayden starting pitcher Mark Doolin, 11, throws 65 mph. Craig has a pitcher with similar skill. On Tuesday, the teams’ pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts with few walks at Woodbury Park.

Reliever Hunter Johnston managed to chew a wad of blue bubble gum from the stretch.

“These kids have been together awhile, like since tee ball,” Tim Johnston said. “I’ve been following them up because I want to stay with this particular group.”

The Hayden Red Sox finished second in the Craig Parks and Recreation League, but the Red Sox won the Meeker Tournament in early June. The team finished 18-5.

“We had a good season,” Johnston said. “We have an incredible amount of talent in this little town in baseball. We want to get a high school team. That is my goal in life.”
