Red Flag Warning issued for Routt and Moffat counties
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Routt, Moffat and Eagle counties from noon-8 p.m. Thursday, according to a Yampa Valley Electric Association news release.
Additionally, Moffat County will return to a Red Flag Warning from 9 a.m.-midnight Friday.
Due to the Red Flag Warning, the Yampa Valley Electric Association entered Fire Protection Mode in portions of Routt and Moffat counties. Affected residents have received a call or email regarding the changes, according to the news release.
Members were advised to use power as normal during Fire Protection Mode and would not notice any service interruptions unless there is an outage, the news release added. To view the affected areas, visit Weather.gov/wrh/Hazards?wfo=psr.
While in Fire Protection Mode, power lines are more sensitive and will instantly stop the flow of electricity if fire dangers, such as trees and branches touching power lines, are detected.
If fire dangers are detected, power will remain off until crews can inspect the power lines to ensure it’s safe to turn them back on.
The Red Flag Warning indicates critical fire weather conditions are affecting the area. High winds and low relative humidity are expected, creating a high risk of wildfire.
Routt County residents are encouraged to subscribe to the Routt County Emergency Alert System, which informs residents of emergencies and incidents as they happen.
