Red Cross helping Steamboat family displaced by trailer fire

— The American Red Cross is helping a Steamboat Springs family that was displaced Monday night when their trailer caught fire in Dream Island Mobile Home Park.

Steamboat Springs Fire Marshal Doug Shaffer said the family was eating dinner when they noticed an ember come down from a pipe on a wood stove that was in use.

Shaffer thinks the fire started where the pipe went into the ceiling.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire after the family made it out safely, but the fire damaged the roof area of trailer.

Shaffer said it appeared the pipe to the stove was old and poorly installed.

“It was only a matter of time before it degraded” to the point of potentially causing a fire, Shaffer said.

The Red Cross was able to provide a hotel voucher, food and other items for the parents, three children and the children’s aunt, all of whom were displaced by the fire.

Shaffer said he thinks the family will be able to move back into the trailer after the roof is repaired.

“Most of the damage was limited to that area,” he said.

Shaffer said stoves and other appliances used to heat homes should be checked before use to ensure they are in good working order.
