Robert Ames said he has been a serious athlete since 1986 when he was 29 years old.

“I started a little late,” Ames confessed.

But despite the delay, Ames is making up for lost time in grand fashion. Readers voted him Steamboat’s best male athlete.

Among the sports Ames competes in are biking, road biking, skate skiing, alpine and Nordic skiing, rock climbing and running. He also races vintage autos. In fact, there isn’t much in the sporting world he hasn’t tried.

As a cyclist Ames is part of a cycling team called Tour The Peaks. The team qualified for the five-person open division in the 24 hours of Moab. Alpine skiing has taken him to the Rocky Mountain Masters Series, and the American Birke Beinner Competition is part of his Nordic skiing experience. The American Birke Beinner Competition is a race that allows you to start were you finished the previous year. Ames finished 110 out of 8,000 people, which qualified him for the Elite Wave.

Rock climbing has taken him to the top of more than 30 14,000-foot peaks. He has run in triathlons of various distances from Minnesota all the way to France.

And he’s got some competition at home his wife, Kirsten, finished second in the balloting for best female athlete behind Penny Hamilton.
