Ranch Rendezvous Day – don’t miss it
As we all know, Steamboat is coming off of an incredible winter season – one affectionately called a “4-Wire Winter,”-where we were blessed with more than 400 inches of our signature Champagne Powder snow. Although the fluffy, white flakes certainly bring the powder hounds to Steamboat (many of whom never leave), epic snow is not the only thing that makes this place memorable.
Dealing with snow has become an everyday winter way of life for folks in Routt County, going back to the very early settlers/ranchers. Mail carriers delivered letters and parcels on snowshoes and skis, and ranchers tended their livestock with sleighs, skis and snowshoes. Faced with mountain passes and the prospect of settling where winter lasts six months and averages 28 feet of snow, pioneers quickly learned how to make the best of both worlds.
Steamboat is one of the few ski resorts in the world with a rich Western heritage that draws from genuine experiences.
This fall, we celebrate the Western heritage that sets our resort community apart from all others with Ranch Rendezvous Day, a joint effort by the Community Agricultural Alliance and the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. Ranch Rendezvous Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the base of the mountain. All are encouraged to learn more about agriculture’s importance through hands-on demonstrations and displays, from animals and fabrics to children’s crafts and a roping demonstration. Locals will display their animals at a petting zoo at the base of the mountain.
The petting zoo in Gondola Square will feature a variety of animals, including cows, sheep, miniature donkeys, draft horses, a mare, chickens, turkeys, alpacas, llamas, camel, bison and yak. Agricultural demonstrations will include a hay maze, tinker toy tub, farrier and roping demonstrations and quilt making. Agricultural displays will include antique tractors, cowboy clothing, a weed/grass display, a snow groomer, and beef, sheep, equine, alpine horse and swine displays. Hayrides will be available throughout the day. Three square dancing shows will take place.
Ranch Rendezvous Day provides a way for all of us to share our Western heritage and also reminds us of the unique Western mix that has evolved in the Yampa Valley.
Come down to celebrate our strong sense of community that has provided us many memorable moments during the Ranch Rendezvous Days. For more information, call the Community Agricultural Alliance at (970) 879-4370 or the Steamboat Ski Area at (970) 879-6111.
