Rams produce at mid-week meet

— Normally, the Soroco track and field team doesn’t compete during the middle of the week. But having a small meet Tuesday at Battle Mountain didn’t keep Soroco coach David Bruner from sticking to his typical training schedule.

“Mondays and Tuesdays are my hardest workout days, and then we taper down Wednesdays and Thursdays before the meets,” Bruner said.

Despite the intense practice Monday, Bruner was pleasantly surprised with his team’s results going against the larger Class 4A opponents of Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley on Tuesday afternoon in Eagle-Vail.

“It was productive,” Bruner said. “I was pleased with the results.”

The girls 1,600-meter relay team of Toni and Tatum Lombardi, Traci Schlegel and Sarajane Rossi took second place behind Eagle Valley. Bruner said the girls also had success in the open sprint and middle distance events, with Rossi and Schlegel running in the 400 meters and Rossi taking top honors in the 800.

On the boys’ side, the 800-meter relay team of Steven Meade, Kane Johnson, Alex Estes and Johnny DeCosta had its best time of the season, finishing in second place.

Bruner noted the positive impact on the boys team from the return of a handful of athletes – Cody Miles, Alex Estes and Matt Watwood – who had been competing for the Steamboat Springs baseball team.

The Rams’ 3,200-meter relay team – David Roberts, Peter Daley, DeCosta and Michael Schmidt – also posted one of its fastest times of the year.

In a competitive throwing field that included more than 20 athletes, Soroco’s Watwood and Dennis Morgan took fourth and sixth place in the discus, respectively.

The Rams run next at the Clint Wells Invitational, starting at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Moffat County High School.

“We expect a lot out of them on Friday,” Bruner said. “There’s been a lot of bronchitis out here, so we’re trying to get healthy. We’ll go see some 2A schools we’ll go against in regionals and get to see where we stack up – right now, the girls’ 4-by-2, sprint medley and 4-by-4 are where we need to be and the 4-by-8 for the boys looks good too.”
