Rams girls again edge Vail Christian in district 3rd-place game

— Utilizing a helpful bench performance, a slightly tweaked lineup and a strong scoring output from its leaders, the Soroco High School girls basketball team sunk Vail Christian on Saturday and claimed third place in the 2A District 5 tournament.

Junior Briana Peterson led with 18 points and senior Jessica Rossi churned in 11 more as the Rams beat the Saints, 50-45, in a game that was close throughout.

“The biggest lead we had was eight,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “I was really pleased.”

Bruner opted to start senior Kellen Garrity, and she responded with 11 points of her own. Freshman guard Charlee Veilleux came off the bench and gave the Rams a spark, especially on the defensive end.

“It was a great team win for us,” Bruner said. “With Charlee coming off the bench, she gave us some great minutes.”

The win was the team’s 18th of the season and the second most wins any Soroco girls team has ever tallied. The 1996 team that competed in the state tournament won 21 games.

Soroco will know by Sunday night who it will face in next Friday’s regional pool in Grand Junction.
