Rams boys can’t score upset over Meeker at districts

— It was a tall order in the first place, and a few mental lapses didn’t help as the Soroco High School boys basketball team fell to 2A powerhouse Meeker to open the district tournament on Friday in Cedaredge.

Meeker, sporting a a nearly perfect 18-1 record coming in, weathered a strong Rams start to beat Soroco, 69-42.

“A lot of it was just mental errors on our part, especially on the offensive end,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said.

The Rams headed into the halftime locker room down by 16 and couldn’t rally back to narrow the double-digit lead over the final 16 minutes.

Juniors Warren Hayes and Chance Beaty led the way in scoring. Hayes poured in 14, and Beaty followed with 13.

The team now gets set to face Vail Christian at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rams have had some close ones against the Saints, the first an overtime loss, and the second, a six-point win in Oak Creek. If Soroco can finish the district tourney on a winning note, it will likely lock in the No. 3 seed for the regional tournament next week.

“This is really important,” Shawn Hayes said. “We want to go in on a positive note.”
