Rams boys basketball squad wraps up season

Melinda Mawdsley

The Soroco boys basketball team wrapped up its season with a 33-56 loss Saturday in Rangely in the opening round of the district playoffs.

Rangely went through the Western Slope League season undefeated on its way to the title and looked the part of league champion against Soroco, Rams coach Andy Smith said.

“I think Rangely will go a long way,” Smith said. “They seem to play so well together and do the things that need to be done. They seem like they are on top of their game.”

Soroco kept Saturday’s game close and only trailed Rangely by a couple of baskets after the first quarter, but the Panthers found their touch from behind the arc — way behind it.

“In the second they hit a string of three’s,” Smith said. “They were shooting from so far back, and they were capitalizing on some of our turnovers.”

The Rams found themselves down by nearly 20 points by halftime, but played the Panthers fairly even in the second half in defeat.

Soroco finishes the season 6-14 overall.

“We went a little bit further than we did last year, and I think we improved,” Smith said.

The Rams advanced into the district tournament by defeating Plateau Valley in overtime Feb. 17.
