Rally for a Cure is today

Golf tournament benefits breast cancer awareness, research

John F. Russell

— More than 70 golfers and volunteers are expected to show up at the Steamboat Golf Club today for the Rally for a Cure golf tournament.

In its fourth year, the tournament will feature a full field of golfers from all four Steamboat courses.

Last year, the event raised $4,120 for its cause and has collected $7,320 since 2000.

“I felt like we should do something as lady golfers here in Steamboat that was worthwhile,” tournament director Linda Danter said.

“I couldn’t think of anybody who hasn’t been touched by this horrible disease.”

Danter said she has received strong support from area merchants, who have donated more than 80 prizes for the on-course competition, silent auction and drawings.

“Our local merchants have been so generous and supportive of this tournament,” Danter said.

Among the items available in the auction are rounds of golf at both the Sheraton and Catamount courses, and a five-and-five ski pass from the Steamboat Ski Area.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35 to 54 and the disease also accounts for more than 75 percent of all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older.

Women gofers in all 50 states will join in this year’s crusade to increase breast cancer awareness and will help raise important research funds for the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen Foundation.

In 2002, more than 2,800 golf clubs across the United States took part in the golf tournament with 150,000 women golfers teeing up.

While the primary mission of Rally for a Cure is to promote early detection, the program to date has generated more than $7 million in its seven-year existence and has earned national awards.

Danter said she has been overwhelmed by the response of the community to the tournament. She raised just over $1,000 when she started the tournament back in 2000. It has doubled each year. People who are not playing in the tournament, but would like to make a donation can mail gifts to Danter at P.O. Box 881594, Steamboat Springs, Co., 80488. The checks should be made out to Rally For a Cure.
