Rain extends softball season

— For many teams in Steamboat Springs’ adult recreational summer softball league, recent game cancellations due to evening thunderstorms mean the nine-week regular season will be extended.

Kit Rice, sports coordinator for Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services said teams playing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays have at least one week of rained out games that need to be replayed.

“Our priority is to be done before Labor Day weekend,” Rice said.

Rice and league coordinator Andrew Schmidt chose to add additional nights of league play to accommodate the cancelled games because they said the leagues in question were too full — occupying the available fields — to have the games replayed with triple-headers on each league’s two remaining regular season game nights.

Schmidt said the game schedules will be posted on the softball trailer across from Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill. Team captains can contact Schmidt at 846-4481.

The following game schedules are tentative, pending additional rainouts:

  • Monday Men’s B League: Make-up games on August 14, 21. Playoffs on August 28, 29.
  • Tuesday Coed B and Coed D Leagues: No games rescheduled.
  • Wednesday Women’s League: Make-up games on August 2. Playoffs on August 9.
  • Wednesday Men’s A League: Make-up games on August 16. Playoffs on August 23, 30.
  • Thursday Coed C League: Make-up games on August 17. Playoffs on August 24, 31.
