Oak Creek — A late morning downpour on Main Street in Oak Creek didn’t stop hundreds of South Routt residents from enjoying a day full of Labor Day fun Monday.

The sudden rain lasted through the parade but let up as people made their way to Decker Park for vendors supplying food, drinks, arts and crafts and plenty of activities for kids.

“The rain didn’t slow anybody down,” said Kate Krautkramer, from rural South Routt, who was enjoying the day with friend Ellen Bonnifield of Yampa.

“It doesn’t bother me,” Bonnifield said.

The rain didn’t dampen the day for volunteers with the Historical Society of Oak Creek & Phippsburg, who use the holiday as an annual fundraiser, selling pies and raffling off handmade quilts and pillows.

About 25 people each supplied two pies for the fundraiser, and volunteers dished them up nonstop under a covered area at Decker Park.

Volunteer Sue MacCarthy said the rain didn’t bother her.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “We’re tough down here.”

The group is collecting money in part to put the finishing touches on a structure they’ve built to house and protect a 1937 fire engine that the Oak Creek Fire Protection District recently restored.

Monday’s kids activities at Decker Park included a bounce house, face painting and airbrush tattoos, rides provided in a lawnmower-powered train and a long list of lawn games, from foot races to sucker races, where toddlers ran across the field to a parent holding a lollypop on the other side.

“I think it’s a good crowd. It’s one of the better turnouts,” said Diane Heavey, who was selling beer and drinks as a volunteer for the seventh time this year. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Proceeds from drink sales are used by the Labor Day Committee to put toward the event next year, Heavey said.
