The Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Department has closed a section of the Yampa River Core Trail at the railroad underpass between Fetcher and Rotary parks due to high water and flooding.
In a news release, city officials said there will be closures and re-routes across the trail system as rivers and creeks rise and fall during spring runoff.
Parks and Recreation is urging trail users to keep an eye out for closures at:
- The railroad underpass between Fetcher and Rotary parks (currently closed)
- The U.S. Highway 40 underpass at Walton Creek
- The U.S. 40 underpass at Fish Creek
- The 13th Street underpass at Bud Werner Memorial Library
City officials said trail sections and other areas likely will open or close as the river reaches peak flows over the coming weeks.
Parks and Recreation asks that trail users obey all closures, follow the detour routes and do not try to cross flooded trails or railroad tracks.
According to the USGS gauge at the Fifth Street Bridge, Yampa River flow surpassed 1,000 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, April 25, and has remained above that level since.
Rivers are anticipated to continue to rise with forecasted warm weather for the coming weekend and into next week.
