Radio stations off air due to damaged satellite

— Regular listeners of classical music on 91.7 and 92.7 FM have not been able to hear the stations the past four days because of a damaged satellite receiver.

Officials with West Slope FM, the local organization that brings classical music to the Yampa Valley via satellite from WWFM in Trenton, N.J., said they have fielded multiple phone calls about the lack of music.

Jon Halverson of West Slope FM said the engineer has found a replacement for its satellite receiver and the repairs should be made this week.

West Slope FM is one of about 17 WWFM affiliates in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Colorado. The Steamboat Springs WWFM affiliate site was the first in the western United States, followed by Aspen.

“Once we got it, Aspen, Carbondale and others have jumped in on it,” said Lynn Abbott of West Slope FM.

Halverson said the damaged receiver, which is on Mount Werner, is about four or five years old.

West Slope FM was formed by a group of local residents in the 1980s and is an affiliate of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. It is supported by volunteer contributions.

Initially, Steamboat received classical music via satellite from KVOV in Denver. West Slope has been affiliated with WWFM since 1996.
